okay, so it turns out that the latest song that i have fallen in love with "yeh yo des hai" is all about transnationalism, cross-culture identity formation and emotionality. It is unnervingly appropriate, which makes it equally unnervingly frustrating. I'm still trying to understand why i like it -- i'm not really all that patriotic - i think it is the shenai. i think the shenai is the ultimate instrument, it does the best job of enlisting a multitude of emotions; ranging from winter weddings in old Delhi, the snake charmers outside the wind palace, the curves of the road to musoorie, the homesickness of cold galesburg where my heating isn't working, the bhukari of kashmir.

incidentally you're probably the only person reading this who can get the indian refrences and figure out my messed up hindi spellings
